Our History
Unbeknownst to many, the building of Core 44 Fitness started out as a horseback riding club, led by a man named Frank Tallmadge. Born in Lancaster, Ohio in 1854, Tallmadge grew up to become a skilled equestrian and a well-known member of Columbus society.
His passion for horseback riding led him to become a member of several riding clubs. During this time, he and fellow members formed a strong bond riding together. This bond led Tallmadge to start his own club on the Eastside of Columbus known as, The Columbus Riding Club.
The Columbus Riding Club held many horseback riding events and competitions in and around Franklin Park, and in 1933, our facility was erected as the home of The Columbus Riding Club. This was the fulfillment of a long held dream for Frank Tallmadge, as it made it possible for the Columbus community to ride day or night all year long. In May of 1937, Tallmadge passed away at the age of 83. However, a part of him and The Columbus Riding Club still lives on, as the cornerstone he laid still stands today on the Southeast corner of Core 44 Fitness on Riding Club Lane.
